The Gunners ended December on a high as they routed Newcastle United 7-3. Starring in this rout were striker Theo Walcott, relishing his central role with a hat trick and French forward Olivier Giroud, who scored twice as a late substitute and was denied by the bar for his third.

Overall it was a good performance from Arsenal’s forwards, although their backline and defending from set pieces still left much to be desired as they conceded three against the Magpies.

Premier League newbies Southampton came mighty close to upsetting Stoke City on Saturday but ended up wasting a two goal lead and a one man advantage to eventually drew 3-3 with Tony Pulis’ Potters at the Britannia. Nigel Adkins’ side were thrashed 6-1 when they played Arsenal earlier in the season.

Southampton’s first test of the New Year sees them host Arsenal at St. Mary’s on Tuesday evening.
