Spurs beat Sunderland 2-1 in their final game of the last year on Saturday. They dominated the opening period but found themselves behind when John O’Shea opened the scoring for the Black Cats.

However the Lilywhites hit back strongly in the second half, with Carlos Cuellar’s own goal from a corner and Aaron Lennon’s excellent finish putting them 2-1 ahead. The only downside was a yellow card for simulation for key winger Gareth Bale, which will see the Welsh wizard suspended for this game as he has accumulated five cards.

Spurs won the reverse fixture at the Madjeski earlier this season, a 3-1 triumph that gave Andre Villas-Boas his first win as Lilywhites manager. Jermain Defoe scored twice in that fixture and is in great form for the Londoners.

Gareth Bale is suspended for European hopefuls Tottenham Hotspur as they welcome Reading to White Hart Lane.
